Your cyber identity is under silent attack.

Did you know that at night, right now, somewhere, a stranger might be assembling a version of you that never asked for permission? Your name, photos, passwords, shopping habits, or even more. That collection is your cyber identity, and protecting your cyber identity is your responsibility.

I’ve spent years protecting my identity from theft, account takeovers, and quiet data leaks. The pattern is always the same. Most people think, “I’m careful,” until the day they aren’t.

Start with the basics that still work when protecting your cyber identity. Use a unique, long password for every important account. A password manager makes the task easy. Turn on two-factor authentication everywhere it is offered, preferably with an authenticator app rather than text messages. These two steps alone stop the majority of casual attacks.

Next, shrink your digital footprint. Search your own name in private mode. Remove old accounts you no longer use. Double-check all your privacy settings on all media platforms and review what strangers can see. That childhood photo or location tag can become the answer to a security question or the starting point for a convincing phishing email.

Watch for the quiet signs. Unexpected login alerts, password reset emails you didn’t request, or friends asking if you really sent that strange message. Act fast. Renew logins, halt sessions, and follow up with the service provider where necessary.

Be ruthless with apps and websites. Only grant the permissions they truly need. Review connected apps every few months and delete the ones collecting data for no good reason. Public Wi-Fi is convenient and dangerous; use a reputable VPN when you’re out and about.

Finally, treat your email like the master key it is. Most account recoveries run through it. Keep it clean, enable advanced protection if available, and never click links in unexpected messages. Check out more…
